Stop Interpreting Everything — An Indigenous Teaching for Inner Peace

There was a moment in the rainforest when an elder shared a teaching that completely changed the way I relate to life.

At the time, I was deeply immersed in a spiritual search. I felt that there must be something more to life, something deeper to understand. And like many people who enter a spiritual path, I began trying to interpret everything. Every dream, situation and experience.

My mind constantly wanted to know what everything meant. Until one day, in the jungle, I asked an elder about a dream.

I told him about the dream, and asked a question that perhaps many of us would ask:

“Grandfather, what does the dream mean?”

He smiled and answered in a way I didn’t expect: "Nothing, son."

Dreams, he explained, are not usually messages that need to be interpreted. They are a natural process of cleansing

Just as our body cleanses itself physically, our being also releases accumulated emotions, sensations, and experiences. During sleep, much of this cleansing happens through dreams.

Even nightmares, he said, are often fears leaving the body.

"They are cleansing," he said. "Cleansing, cleansing, cleansing — so that we can live a lighter life."

Then he shared something even more profound.

He said:

"If you want your life to change, stop interpreting everything."

When we constantly interpret everything that happens to us, we drain enormous amounts of energy.

Interpretation opens the door to uncertainty.
And uncertainty quickly becomes fear.

The ego feeds that fear, giving it more strength and more presence in our life.

Many of us have been taught that the solution to life is to understand everything through reason. But the elder said that the deepest answers do not come through reasoning harder. They come through silence.

Trusting the Mystery of Life

When we stop interpreting everything, something very profound happens. We begin to recognize that life itself is guided by a mystery far greater than our mind.

The elders describe this mystery as an infinite fountain of love

When we leave things in the hands of that mystery, our life begins to move more fluidly. This does not mean that meaning does not exist. It simply means that it does not always correspond to us to know it immediately.

The elder explained something very important: When Spirit truly wants to communicate something to us, it is clear. It does not confuse us. It does not require complicated interpretation. It is direct. Precise. Obvious.

And when something is not clear, we simply leave it in the hands of Spirit. In time, what needs to be revealed will reveal itself, naturally.

The elder told me something I have never forgotten.

“Save your energy like a treasure.”

When we stop interpreting everything, we stop draining our energy through constant analysis and uncertainty. And something beautiful begins to happen.

Our mind becomes clearer.
And our life becomes lighter.

Instead of trying to figure everything out, we begin to trust the natural movement of life.

Learning from Nature

If we observe nature carefully, we see something clearly. Nothing in nature is interpreting anything. The trees are not analyzing their existence. The rivers are not questioning their direction. Everything simply allows itself to be moved by the natural force of life.

And we can learn from that same intelligence.

When we stop interpreting everything, we begin to move through life with more serenity and detachment.

Another important teaching the elder shared is that our body is a powerful sensor.

Our body naturally tells us when something is aligned.

When something feels peaceful, beautiful, and harmonious, we allow it to stay within. But when something brings heaviness, confusion, or density, we simply allow it to pass through us. We do not hold onto it, or feed it. We let it pass.

When Answers Truly Come

Over time, something else begins to happen. Answers do come, but not through analysis. They arrive through clarity. Because when an answer comes from Spirit, it carries a very specific quality. It brings peace. It has direction. And there is no need to interpret it.

You simply know.

The teaching the elder gave that day was simple, but it changed my life. The possibility of not interpreting anything, but rather to allow life to unfold. To trust the intelligence of creation. And to recognize that there is a power far greater than our mind guiding this whole existence.

When we stop trying to understand everything, we begin to live with more presence.
And more trust in the mystery of life.

A SEED TO CARRY

What if you didn’t need to interpret everything that happens in your life? What if some experiences are simply passing through you, cleansing, teaching, moving, and preparing the next step?

Today, try this simple practice:
When something happens that you don’t fully understand, resist the impulse to analyze it.

Place it in the hands of the mystery of life.

Save your energy.

And trust that when an answer truly needs to arrive, it will come with clarity and peace.
