What an Indigenous Elder Taught Me About Thinking
Feb 08, 2026
From the beginning of time human beings have searched for clarity, for a way to live well on this earth, and to feel at peace inside ourselves. And yet confusion has followed us. Not because we lack intelligence or effort, but because we have been given so many voices to listen to. Rules about how to think, how to live, how to be.
And little by little, our way of seeing life became conditioned. Our thinking became shaped by many ideas, often well-intentioned, but not always aligned with our own inner truth.
And today, more than ever, what confuses humanity most is the mind itself.
So much information.
So many “right” ways to live.
When I was living with Indigenous communities in the Putumayo rainforest in Colombia, I was deeply immersed in this search. I had read, listened, tried, followed many paths, each one offering answers.
But instead of clarity, I felt overwhelmed. My thoughts were scattered. I didn’t know which direction to follow to live a good life.
At one point, I felt completely lost. So I asked an elder a question that came from exhaustion and sincerity.
“Grandfather,” I said, “what is the best way to guide my thoughts?
Because I feel like I’m going crazy.”
He smiled.
And then he shared a teaching that changed my life.

The elder said:
“My child, there are two powerful things to do with your thoughts.”
The First: Silence the Mind
“The most powerful one,” he said, “is to make silence in your mind.”
At first, I didn’t understand. “Does that mean not thinking?” I asked.
He shook his head.
“Thinking is natural,” he said. “It flows like the air that comes in and goes out. Thoughts will always move through you. Silencing the mind is not about fighting thoughts. It’s not about forcing them away. It’s about focus. Simply place your attention on something that feels good,” he said.
Listen to the wind.
The birds.
The river.
If you’re at home, play music you enjoy and listen to it fully.
Or feel your breath, the air entering, the air leaving, and enjoy the act of breathing.
Make it pleasant. Make it enjoyable.
Thoughts will return and that’s normal. And when they do, you gently return your focus again.
Little by little, the mind softens. A silence begins to appear. And with it, peace.
This silence becomes a refuge, a place you can return to.
The Second: Think Beautifully
Then I asked him, “But grandfather… what if it’s hard for me to focus?”
He smiled again. “Then,” he said, “at the very least think beautifully.”
To think beautifully is to align the mind with the heart.
We can remember moments of beauty.
We can imagine the most beautiful dreams we have for our lives.
We can bring to mind something that feels harmonious and true.
Your thoughts are like television channels. You don’t have to watch all of them. You have the remote control. When unpleasant thoughts arise, you don’t stay there feeding them. Let them pass. You choose what you tune into.
Use Your Mind Well and Life Changes
Silencing the mental chatter through focus and thinking beautifully, are the most elevated ways to use our thinking.
At first, it may feel difficult.
But when we practice, and practice, and allow it to become a habit…Something shifts.
With time, we begin to feel like owners of our own life.
Silencing the mind gives us personal power, because thoughts flowing in density drain our energy. When we focus, that energy stays with us.
Thinking beautifully raises our inner vibration. It nourishes us. It reshapes how we move through life.
We begin to feel lighter.
More peaceful.
More present.
Not because life becomes perfect, but because our relationship with life changes.
This teaching is simple.
It doesn’t require belief.
It requires practice.
And little by little, clarity returns not from outside voices, but from within.
A SEED TO CARRY
When your mind feels crowded or confused, remember this:
There is nothing wrong with your thoughts. The best thing is to fine-tune yourself to where you place your attention.
Focus on what brings peace.
And when focus feels hard, think beautifully.
Over time, this becomes a refuge and a space where clarity blossoms.
