Dreams, Energy, and the Art of Restoration
May 26, 2026
There is an aspect of our life that occupies nearly a third of our existence, yet most of us rarely stop to truly observe it.
Our dreams.
Every night, we enter into the mysterious experience of sleep and dreaming, and for many ancient cultures, this was not seen as something random or insignificant. Our ancestors paid deep attention to dreams because they recognized that something important was happening there.
From the ancestral perspective, our being is always trying to restore itself naturally. The body constantly releases what it no longer needs. We sweat, we cry, we go to the bathroom, and through all of these processes the body is cleansing and putting itself back into balance. Nothing is happening without purpose.
In the same way, our dreams are also part of this natural process of cleansing.

What Our Ancestors Understood About Dreams, Healing, and Inner Peace
Our ancestors taught that through dreams, our being releases emotions, fears, memories, and psychological tensions that have accumulated inside of us through time. This is why many ancient peoples, such as the Toltecs, Mayans, and other ancestral traditions, learned to pay close attention to their dreams and recognize a deeper purpose within them.
One of the practices they emphasized was learning how to quiet the mind before sleep. They understood that when our thoughts are constantly moving, we interfere with the natural process of restoration happening within us. So before going to sleep, they would bring their attention to the breath, to the sound of nature, to silence, or to soothing music; anything that helped calm the mental noise.
This may seem simple, but from this perspective, it is something very powerful.
In life, everything functions with energy. And when we quiet the mind, we stop interfering with the natural healing process of our being. Our body and spirit already know how to restore themselves, but our constant thinking often delays that process.
Paying Attention to Dreams
Our ancestors discovered that when we enter sleep with more awareness, it is possible to become conscious within our dreams. To recognize, even while dreaming, that we are dreaming. And according to these traditions, this state of awareness generates a tremendous amount of energy within us.
This is something very important to understand because, from an ancestral perspective, what gives us well-being in life is energy.
When we have energy, we naturally experience more peace, joy, clarity, creativity, and trust. Life begins to flow more easily. Relationships improve. We feel lighter. Things begin to fall into place naturally.
And this is one of the reasons our elders taught that it is important to remember our dreams.
Not because we need to obsess over them or search for hidden meanings, but because the simple act of remembering them helps us gather and conserve energy.
THE DEEPER PURPOSE OF NIGHTMARES
This becomes especially important when we have dense or unpleasant dreams.
An elder once said, “If you have a nightmare, get happy.”
This may sound strange, but what they meant is that when fear, heaviness, or difficult emotions appear in our dreams, it is often because something is leaving us. Something that has been trapped inside the unconscious is finally coming to the surface so it can be released.
And here comes one of the most important teachings our ancestors shared about dreams:
Do not interpret them.
Our elders taught that when we begin obsessively interpreting dreams, we open the door to uncertainty and begin draining our energy. Instead of allowing the dream to complete its cleansing process, we trap it again in the mind. We begin creating fear, anxiety, or stories around it.
From this perspective, dreams are not always trying to predict something or warn us about the future. Sometimes they are simply helping us release what we no longer need.
And this applies not only to dreams, but also to daily life.
A Reflection for Waking Life
There are moments where fear, sadness, frustration, or dense emotions arise during the day. Our elders taught that these experiences are also part of a cleansing. Something inside of us is trying to move, reorganize, and come back into balance.
The practice is not to trap those experiences. But to observe them and allow them to pass through.
Just like the body naturally releases what it no longer needs, our emotional and psychological world is also always trying to cleanse itself.
And when Spirit truly wants to reveal something to us, our elders said that it comes with clarity and peace. It does not create confusion or fear. A true revelation does not need endless interpretation because it carries its own understanding within it.
This is why humility becomes so important.
Our ancestors taught that every experience—whether through dreams or through daily life—can be humbly placed in the hands of a greater power. Spirit knows what to do with it. Spirit knows where to place it.
Our role is much simpler.
✔️ To live one day at a time.
✔️ To think beautifully.
✔️ To enjoy life.
✔️ To care for our energy.
And little by little, our being transforms into a stronger and more peaceful container of energy.
When that happens, we begin to notice that life starts organizing itself naturally. Relationships flow more easily. Trust grows. We feel more peace, more joy, more well-being.
Not because we forced life to change, but because we stopped interfering with the natural intelligence already trying to restore us.
A SEED TO CARRY
Our ancestors taught that life is always trying to bring us back into balance.
Even through our dreams.
Even through the emotions we don’t fully understand.
Maybe the invitation is not to fear what arises within us, but to learn how to observe it with more peace, humility, and trust.
